Sidelined

For the past few months it has been difficult for me to sing. I kept on trying to hide it, but the more I did the harder it became to sing. With the occasional crack in my voice during a show, I felt like I was deconstructing in front of audiences. I had spent years of my life perfecting my singing and priding myself in my vocal power and range. Tragically, both those qualities were starting to slip away. With the encouragement of loved ones, I went to go see a doctor. It was one of the best decisions of my life. She told me that because of a combination of allergies, acid reflux, and vocal strain, my vocal cords were very swollen and irritated. So needless to say, I have been taking it easy (and a lot of medicine) for the last couple of weeks so I could heal. The good news is that the doctor assured me with a few weeks rest and the proper medication I would be good as new!!

Life has a way of breaking you down before you can get stronger. I’m happy to say that in a few weeks I will be stronger than I ever was, because even at my best I was still struggling with acid reflux and allergies, I just didn’t know it. I can’t wait to sing this Friday night at the Belmont. My voice is going to soar. ~Mark

WOW! I had no idea Mark. It is good you did take care of yourself though...and yes, you are right about having to break down before you get stronger. Also...I think I asked you this before...but it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to take some voice lessons. Perfecting your sound is one thing...but learning how to use your vocal cords to the best of their ability without causing strain or further problems is something EVERY singer could use. Just an idea.

I heard a snippet of "Static" on 94.7 this morning, promoting one of your upcoming shows. I swear my heart skipped a beat! You guys were made for radio and the music world! Keep up all the hard work...but always remember to take time to rest too! We are only human ya know...

See ya'll on Friday! :)

Hi Mark,

I'm sorry to hear what you're having to go through with your voice, but I'm relieved to hear that it's curable and will get better in time. I'm a sufferer of Acid Reflux as well and have had allergies for the past couple weeks, so I can feel your pain as far as it being a hassle, BUT I don't know how it is to count on your voice as much as you have too and how frustrating that aspect of it must be. Just hang in there and know that all your fans are supporting you and wishing you the best. You'll only get stronger from this experience and cherish your gift even more.
I can't believe Irisa heard a snippet of "Static" on 94.7!! I listen all the time, but haven't caught it yet. I can't wait! How exciting for you guys!

Best Wishes,

You have the gift of an amazing voice and sometimes you just have to take care of yourself before your vocal cords really suffer. I can sing...just badly though...haha...It's okay to take a break from singing. You're human and have to give your voice a break. I have acid reflux and allergies and it's no walk in the park. In fact, it sucks so I can only imagine how much worse you can feel since you sing (probably every day). It's good to know that you went to see a doctor before it got any worse. So I expect you to sing your heart out the next time I'm in Austin for an mwest fix! Ciao my friend :)
